View Windows BitLocker Recovery Key

Task:

For all compatible USNH-issued devices, BitLocker whole drive encryption (USNH Cybersecurity policy) is enabled as a default security function. Periodically, a firmware/BIOS update, hardware repair, or password reset may trigger a BitLocker password prompt on your device. This is an expected security function. End users can view their BitLocker key of any institutional device which has properly cached its key. Follow the instructions below to proceed.

From a separate computer or mobile device, navigate to: https://myaccount.microsoft.com/device-list to view your authorized Microsoft's Device List.

Instructions:

  1. Sign in to your authorized Microsoft's Device List https://myaccount.microsoft.com/device-list using your USNH account (username @ usnh.edu). You will be directed to the University System of New Hampshire's Single Sign On (SSO) page. 

  2. Enter your USNH username and password.

  3. Choose the appropriate device, click View BitLocker keys

  4. Click Show recovery key.

Outcome:

Recovery key will be displayed in a pop-up window. Type this key into the Recovery screen on the affected computer.

If your institutionally-owned device does not list a BitLocker key, contact the IT Help Desk for assistance. Personal device Bitlocker credentials may not be cached and cannot be recovered by USNH IT staff.
