Upgrade to macOS - Big Sur

Frequently Asked Questions

I like the current macOS I am using; do I need to upgrade?

Yes, the upgrade is mandatory as the  ET&S is working towards standardizing to Big Sur across the environment. Being on the latest macOS will allow us to offer a more stable, secure, and feature enhanced computing experience. Standardization will also allow us to provide a better support experience.

Ok, that sounds great, how do I get the new Big Sur OS?

The Big Sur OS upgrade will be “self-serve” and with some guidance below, you will be able to transition to the new OS seamlessly on your own.  We encourage you to download and install Big Sur from the App Store.

Should I close out of all applications while I'm running the update?

Yes, but you will also get prompted to close apps before the update starts installing.

Will I get prompted to restart or will it just restart on its own?

When the install is ready to go, you will get prompted to restart.

Downloading and installing macOS Big Sur from the App Store:

It takes time to download and install the macOS, so please make sure that you have a reliable Internet connection. If you're using a Mac notebook computer, plug it into AC power. You might find it easiest to begin installation in the evening so that it can complete overnight, if needed or just prior to leaving campus for the day.

  1. Navigate to the App Store
  2. Choose the Apple menu > App Store
  3. In the search field type in Big Sur and select View
  4. Select Get
  5. Big Sur will begin downloading (time to finish is dependent upon the speed of your internet connection) Once the download is complete, you will be prompted to begin the OS installation > click Continue
  6. Agree to the licensing information
  7. Click Continue (you may be prompted to re-enter your credentials to begin the installation)

Congratulations! You’re now on your way to the new macOS Big Sur!

The system will restart and it will take roughly 30 minutes to complete the installation.

If you have any questions concerning this or any other technology issue, please do not hesitate to contact your campus Help Desk.
