Canvas: Converting a file to allowed file types

Some assignments in Canvas may be setup to only allow students to submit certain types of files such as: Word or PDF versions of a document.  This article provides instructions for how to convert documents from one file type to another commonly used applications.

As a USNH student, you have free access to Office 365 and can access this software on institution and personal devices to create and edit Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents.  Instructions for installation are here in this KB article about MicroSoft Office 365. There may be times that you choose to use a collaborative tool like Google Docs or Google Slides, or a tool you are more familiar with like Pages or Keynote on Mac devices. This article has links to easy steps to:

1. Save a Google Doc to a Word or PDF document. These same steps apply to any files created in Google.

2. Save a Pages document to a Word or PDF document. These same steps apply to Keynote files.

3. Save a Word document to a PDF.

4. Print any onscreen page or document to a PDF.

  1. Select a file in any application that prints and open it.
  2. Choose “File” > “Print”.
  3. Choose “Save as PDF” from the list of printers in the print dialog box.
  4. Click "Print" or "Save".
  5. Enter a new file name for your PDF. Save to your desired location.
