WebI: Report Creators - Why and how to use the Java Applet tool?

Task: How to use the WebI Java Applet tool.

Most of the functions Report Creators need are available in the HTML Design tool, which is much faster than the Applet tool and does not rely on Java. Occasionally, an advanced creator will need functionality that is not available in the Design tool. In these few instances, a creator can temporarily turn on the Java Applet, modify or create the report, and turn off the Applet.

These are the only known reasons for advanced report creators to temporarily use the Java Applet:

  • The Duplicate Query function does not work in HTML. If you would like to duplicate an existing query instead of re-writing it, you will have to switch to the Applet.
  • In the Applet, you can copy a simple table from one WebI document to another WebI document. The copy/paste function it will carry over the table, the underlying query, and any variables used. This is very useful if you've done a quick design of a table and decide you want to use the information in a formal report. To do this:
    1. Open the document with the table.
    2. Open the template document.
    3. Right-click and copy the table.
    4. Switchover to the template or your formal report, add a tab, and right-click and paste into the body of the new report.
    5. Save the template with your new report's name. Now the objects, variables and query associated with the table are in your new report and ready for use.

Note: You can also copy a table from a report in the Applet to Excel.

  • You want to use a predefined Document Prompt Summary on your report. See the Knowledge Base Article Predefined Document Prompt Summary Webpage Not Found Error for more information.
  • You need gridlines to help you with your design work (these are available in the Java Applet under "Properties" on the "Application" tab).

The steps for switching to the Java Applet and switching back to the HTML Design view are below. Although you can continue to design using the Applet, for security and efficiency, it is recommended that you turn the Java Applet on only when you need it and turn it off when you are done using it.

To turn the Java Applet on:

  1. In the upper right-hand section of the menu bar from any page, click the link for Preferences.
  2. In the Web Intelligence Preferences section, change the "Modify" preference to Applet.
  3. Click the Save & Close button in the bottom right corner of the page and click OK to the message that appears.
  4. Log out of WebI and then log back in for the change to take effect.
